From Word 2007, .docx becomes the default document saving format. The problem with this format is that it is not backwards compatible. You can not open it with Word 2003 or previous versions. Therefore, converting the document from .docx to .doc will make it more convenient to read by many word processors.

Convert DOCX to DOC on PC
Use Kingsoft Writer Free 2012. Open a .docx document with Kingsoft Writer, and go to Writer > Save as > Microsoft Word 97-2003 Document.

Convert DOCX to DOC on Android Device
On an Android mobile / tablet, launch Kingsoft Office for Android, open a .docx document by tapping on Folders. Then tap on Save button on toolbar to choose .doc as the saving format.
